A Maine Business Through And Through.

Bohndell Sails opened in Thomaston, Maine in 1870. Started by E.S. Bohndell as a rigging shop for the local working schooner fleet, a few years later the business was moved to a facility on what is now Route 1, Rockport, Maine. Operations expanded to sailmaking services and Henry Bohndell, son of E.S. Bohndell, joined the team. Eventually Henry’s son, Henry Jr. would take over in the 1950’s as a third generation sailmaker and rigger. Bob Chace entered the picture in the 1970’s when a chance meeting lead to an on-the-spot job offer. Bob and his wife, Susan, purchased Bohndell Sails & Rigging along with their business partners in 1979. In 1994 they moved operations across Route 1 to a facility custom built to suit the needs of a modern sail loft and rigging shop. These days, their daughter Robin works at Bohndell’s year round to continue the family tradition and keep this long time Maine business running.
